HELEN PALMER | Opening Keynote

Our neurobiological responses of fight, flight, freeze create hard-wired patterns that move us into automatic, especially in times of stress. In our human evolution, these responses have been necessary for our survival. However, we continue to default to these patterns and deny ourselves responsible choice. In cultivating space between event and reaction, we have the potential to allow a new path to form, to create a choice-point where objective reality becomes more clear as type recedes into the background. The deeper we go, the more we can relax these patterns and allow the higher qualities of our Being to emerge.

Helen is one of the founders of the Enneagram movement in the United States, a teacher of intuition, and bestselling author of five well regarded books in the field of human consciousness, two of which on the Enneagram topic are now in 27 languages. This work was the subject of a recent PBS television documentary Breaking out of the Box – Discovering the Enneagram.

Together with David Daniels, M.D. she founded Enneagram Studies in the Narrative Tradition, a school dedicated to psychological and Spiritual integration, still teaching a portion of its Professional Training Programs. Their school has brought the integration theme to many thousands in many countries during its 20-year history.

BIOLOGY AND PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION: BRIDGING SCIENCE AND THE ENNEAGRAM

DAVID DANIELS MD | JACK KILLEN MD | and KRISTEN ARTHUR PhD

Download Handouts for this session In this presentation, we will explore a body of theoretical and experiential panel work that is grounded in contemporary neurobiology and attachment theory, and which provides fresh and powerful insights into the primal undercurrents of mammalian emotion, which fuels reactivity. It also illuminates the biological processes that underpin growth and change, and offers pathways for deep in-the-moment transformational work with the three core aversive emotions of fear, anger, and distress, which we humans share with all mammals.

David is a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford Medical School, a leading developer of the Enneagram and co-author of The Essential Enneagram. He maintained a private psychiatric practice in Palo Alto for more than 30 years and is a long-time teacher of the Enneagram.

Together with Helen Palmer, he pioneered the Enneagram Professional Training Program™ (EPTP). Since 1988, David has trained hundreds of professionals in the Enneagram through this intensive training program designed to bring Enneagram knowledge to individuals working in fields ranging from business to psychology.

Jack, a physician and clinical researcher, is Deputy Director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He is certified as an Enneagram teacher in the Narrative Tradition, and has also studied with Ginger Lapid-Bogda, Tom Condon, and Jerry Wagner. He is past-president of the Association of Enneagram Teachers in the Narrative Tradition, and a member of Enneagram Studies in the Greater Washington Area. He teaches Enneagram workshops and collaborates with his life-partner Fred Boykin in work with individuals and couples. He has a particular interest in the intersections of science, spirituality, and the Enneagram. Recently he has led workshops on these interests with David Daniels, MD.

Kristin certified in 2003 and in 2008, earned a Doctorate in Human Development with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech. Her dissertation research examined associations between Enneagram types and Attachment styles. Kristin's work has been published in the Enneagram Journal (2010) and in TALK (2011) and she has presented at the 2004 International Enneagram Association Annual Meeting, the 2006 Association of Enneagram Teachers in the Narrative Tradition Annual Meeting, and at the 2007 Southeastern Symposium on Child and Family Development.

Each Enneagram type has its particular defense system: an idealization, an avoidance, and a defense mechanism. This system develops to protect us from pain we could not fully process earlier in our lives. In our present lives, however, they are often automatic responses that keep us from deeper contact with our inner selves and the people in our lives. In order to access our higher qualities we need to meet these defenses with awareness, presence, and practice. The challenge is not to avoid our pain, but to work with it. The good news is that we have specific steps to follow if we are willing to go "deeper where we stand." Explore with us the defense systems of the nine types and how to work with them using lecture, breakout groups, somatic (felt sense) exercises, and panels.

Terry currently teaches in the Enneagram Professional Training Program (EPTP) with Helen Palmer, David Daniels and Peter O'Hanrahan, and is involved in the ongoing development of the EPTP. She completed her own certification through the EPTP in 1990 and has mentored candidates for certification in the program since 1991. In addition to her work with the EPTP, she teaches workshops on the transformative power of the Enneagram.

Peter has been combining the Enneagram with somatic work since 1978 with an emphasis on Reichian/Bioenergetic bodywork. He teaches the Embodied Enneagram workshop and writes about the somatic profiles of the nine character types.

Marion, RPT has been practicing physical therapy for 30 years and is the co-owner of Spring Hill Physical Therapy & Acupuncture Center in Grass Valley, California. Marion teaches regularly with Helen Palmer and Terry Saracino. Her primary focus is on manual therapy and trauma resolution.

workshop graphic iconTHE ENNEAGRAM PROCESS MODEL, NINE STEPS TO INCREASE CONSCIOUSNESS
ERIC SALMON

Download Handouts for this session

The Enneagram can be used as a support of consciousness: when moving around the circle, the nine points can be used as "meditation practices" or "means of centering yourself". It helps to become more aware of how resistances try to redirect your behavior in automatic patterns... and certainly invites to wholeness!

Eric SalmonEric Salmon has taught the EPTP program for fifteen years for more than 3000 participants, not only in France, but in ten different countries, including India and Iran. He has written four Enneagram books, one of which, the ABC of the Enneagram exists in nine languages and another is dedicated to subtypes. For Eric, the Enneagram is a way to awaken people to a larger consciousness, to be moved in their heart at a place they will wish to come back to.

JOSEPHINE SECCOMBE

Because my work involves such a variety of groups and teams, a fabric mat has proved to be most valuable in accelerating the understanding of complex Enneagram theory. We will sit in a circle around the mat and explore how this can be helpful, both to ourselves and to others. We will also consider ways of handling difficult comments and questions that typically come from newcomers to the Enneagram.

Josephine SeccombeJosephine Seccombe completed her EPTP training early Y2000. She has worked with many diverse groups, including the largest UK direct marketing agency, where for a decade, the Enneagram was used overtly as a team-building tool. Nowadays she works mainly inside the Oxford Anglican Diocese offering the Enneagram to a wide range of multi-faith groups, including the ordained/lay, novices/trainee priests, and spiritual directors across the human spectrum.

workshop graphic iconUSING FAMILY TO KINDLE INNER AWAKENING
BARBARA WHITESIDE

Download Handouts for this session
Can we have a fresh impression of those we love most when we are fixated in our Type? Is it possible to work directly with our reactivity in our families, using this energy as fuel for transformation? How can we use the Enneagram to bring compassion to family members and how can we avoid using it in subtle and not-so-subtle ways as ammunition? Can we imagine a different way of approaching family life, a way that reflects something whole, centered, grounded, present, and fully alive?

In this crucible of intimate relatedness we call family, we have literally hundreds of moments daily to wake up to ourselves and to others in ways that allow something fresh and alive to happen within us. We will explore how family provides us with the rich material to transform our own lives and the lives of those we love.

Barbara WhitesideBarbara Whiteside certified in 2001 and has been coaching and teaching workshops ever since. She presented at the 2010 IEA Conference and her articles, "Seeing Our Children Clearly" and "Listening from a Type Perspective" were published in the 2010 Enneagram Journal. Before certifying in the Enneagram, Barbara worked as a parent educator and consultant for 23 years. She now brings the gift of the Enneagram to all her work with families, couples, and individuals.

Barbara believes that spiritual practices can help us work with our own personality challenges and open us to a deeper truth that is often obscured by our personality style.
